When to call

Signs you need garbage disposal services

  • A disposal that jams more than once or twice a year
  • A unit that is eight to ten years old and has grown slower and louder
  • Water or rust stains in the cabinet under the sink
  • Dishwasher water backing up into the sink, or standing in the dishwasher after a cycle
  • A smell that returns within days of a deep cleaning
  • A kitchen remodel, or a sink with no disposal that you would like to add

What you get

The ABC Plumbing difference

  • Most jams and tripped units fixed in minutes, with the cause explained
  • Honest repair-or-replace advice: a new disposal only when it costs less than repeated service calls
  • The electrical connection, dishwasher drain knockout and trap arrangement all done properly
  • The old unit removed and hauled away with every replacement
  • A written flat-rate price before work starts, with the diagnostic fee credited toward the job if you go ahead
  • A 5-year written workmanship warranty on installations, 1 year on repairs, and the manufacturer's warranty on the unit passed through to you

Diagnosis

What is your disposal telling you?

Most disposal trouble announces itself with a sound, a smell or a puddle. Here is what each one usually means.

  • Humming, will not spin

Jammed flywheel. We free it with a hex wrench and remove the object, then reset the overload.

  • Nothing at all

Tripped reset button, dead outlet or burnt-out motor. We test before recommending a replacement.

  • Leaks underneath

Failed sink flange seal, drain gasket or cracked housing. Seals can be redone; a cracked housing means replacement.

  • Slow drain or backup

Often a clog in the trap or branch line, not the disposal itself. We clear the line.

  • Bad smell

Buildup on the grind chamber and splash guard. We deep clean and replace the guard if torn.

  • Grinding or rattling

A spoon, bottle cap or bone fragment in the chamber, or worn grinding parts. We retrieve the object, and if the bearings are worn out, we replace the unit.

  1. 01

    Diagnose

We cut the power, find out whether it is a jam, a seal, the motor or the drain, and tell you what we see.

Repair or replace, with a flat-rate price for each option in writing, so the choice is yours.

  3. 03

    Fix or install

  4. 04

We run water and the disposal, check for drips and confirm the dishwasher drains cleanly.

Repair first, replace when it makes sense

Most jams and tripped units are fixed in minutes. If the motor is burnt out, the bearings are shot or the housing is leaking, a new disposal costs less than repeated service calls. Disposals generally last 8 to 12 years.

We tell you which side of that line your unit is on, and we do not replace a disposal that just needs a reset.

Choosing a new disposal

Horsepower matters: 1/3 HP suits light use, 1/2 to 3/4 HP suits most families, and 1 HP is for heavy cooking households. Continuous-feed models are standard; batch-feed models add a safety lid. Higher-end units include extra sound insulation and stainless grind parts.

We handle the electrical connection, dishwasher drain knockout, and a proper trap arrangement so the dishwasher does not back up into the sink.

When the disposal is not the problem

A sink that drains slowly or backs up is often blocked downstream, in the trap or the branch line, and a good motor gets blamed for it. We check the drain before we recommend replacing anything.

If the line is the culprit, we clear it with a cable or, for greasy buildup, hydro jetting, and we explain what caused it so it does not return.

Keep it healthy

Run cold water while grinding, avoid grease, coffee grounds in bulk, bones, fibrous peels and pasta or rice that swells. Ice cubes and citrus peels freshen the chamber occasionally.

Never put your hand in the chamber. If something is stuck, switch the power off at the breaker and use a hex key in the bottom socket, or call us.
