When Is It Time to Repipe Your House?

Repeated pinhole leaks, discolored water and low pressure are signs your pipes are at the end of their life.

Repiping means replacing the supply lines throughout your home, and few homeowners want to think about it. But when pipes are failing, patching them one leak at a time becomes costly, disruptive and stressful. Here is how to tell when a repipe is the smarter move.

The clearest sign is repeated leaks. If you have had two or more pinhole leaks in a year, the pipe is likely corroding from the inside, and others will follow. Discolored or rusty water, particularly in the morning, points to galvanized steel corroding. Metallic taste, stains on fixtures and falling water pressure also suggest pipes clogged with mineral buildup or scale.

Age matters. Galvanized steel typically lasts 40 to 60 years, and copper often 50 or more, though aggressive water can cut that in half. Polybutylene, a gray plastic used from the late 1970s to mid-1990s, is notorious for failing and should be replaced. Homes in coastal Orange County built between the 1950s and 1980s often have one of these materials.

Modern repiping typically uses copper or PEX. Copper is durable and long established. PEX is flexible, faster to install, resists scale and often costs less, with fewer joints to fail. Your plumber can choose based on your home, budget and water quality. Many repipes use access through attics, crawl spaces and small, strategically placed openings in walls, then patch and paint afterward.

A typical house takes two to five days, depending on size and complexity, and we work to keep water on as much as possible. Expect permits and inspection, which protect you and keep your insurance in good standing. Some insurers even offer discounts for new plumbing, and a repipe can raise your resale value and appraisal confidence.

Not every home needs a full repipe. Sometimes isolated sections can be replaced, or a leak caused by a high water pressure issue can be fixed with a regulator. The honest answer comes from an inspection. Call ABC Plumbing for an assessment and a written, itemized estimate before any work begins. Every repipe we do carries a five-year written workmanship warranty.
